Raising a Child with a Severe Disability

Putting things into perspective:
Single mom with a handicapped child here in San Felipe-
1) Rent – 1500 pesos
2) Electric – 1000 pesos

3) Water – 100 pesos
4) Diapers – 400 pesos
5) Medications – 1800 pesos
6) Nutritional supplement – 720 pesos
Total of 5520 pesos per month.

Now keep in mind that we have not included food, clothing, Dr visits, lab tests and if the child is in school, those costs. We have also not factored in having one or two more children and those costs either.
If anything like wheelchairs are needed etc. that is additional costs.

IF she is working as a hotel maid for example, she will make about 3600 pesos per month. IF she works, childcare for a handicapped child is about 600 pesos per week. So childcare itself would be 2400 pesos a month. Basically, she cant work or must pursue work that you don’t even want to think about.

Now if we multiply that by 20 children, that is over 110,000 pesos per month. That’s over $8400 per month without even factoring in food. Now not all moms are single and some have less expenses but I think you get the picture.

The above numbers do not figure in our 10 handicapped adults or any of our food distribution.

Day Labor Program

Need a house cleaned? How about yard work? How about a whole new patio? Our day labor program can help. The way the program works is that we introduce people that need work done with people looking for work.

The laborers do not work for Volunteers Without Limits and we do not make any money from this service. All we do is keep a list of  people in the community who have expressed an desire to work.

We have had really good reports from people who have used the service.

Rates as of November 2010: $10 for half a day and $20 for a full day. House cleaning is $20 per house for 1 story, $30 for 2 story and $40 for 3 story. Supplies and equipment should be provided by the person doing the hiring.

Workers are picked up in front of our facility at the prearranged time and taken to where the work is to be performed and then returned when it is done.

Please make sure they have at least water to drink during the time they are working.

Tips are optional and pretty common.

Please give us 24 hours advanced notice to find the workers you need and be specific about the type of work  you want done so we can find the right workers for that particular job.

Equine Therapy

Equine Therapy

Due to Dr. Sunigas schedule we have not been able to do equine therapy for quite awhile. We hope that we will one day be able to start again.

Therapeutic horseback riding benefits the communication, motor skills, and social skills of an handicapped person. It also causes improvement in responses to verbal and external stimuli and relaxation.
